No amount of water could quell the fire that Bunji Garlin caused at Woodford Square on Thursday 8th February, 2007. He and the Asylum band were able to attract a sea of thousands to the Square and entertain them with many of his popular hits. This crowd was possibly the largest, so far, of the bmobile concert series which, according to Bunji Garlin, is testimony of the love that his fans have for him despite not releasing a ‘big tune’ for Carnival 2007.

This week-long activity began on Monday 5th February, 2007, and already people displayed excitement for this time-off during the day from their daily routines.

NACC Young Kings Calypso Monarch Competition 2007 in pictures

The Government is in trouble over crime, young calypsonians are not afraid to say so, and the singers are putting their faith in God.

Those were the messages coming out of the Young Kings Calypso Monarch Competition held on Monday night at St James Ampitheatre by the National Action Cultural Committee (NACC).

The 21 performers sang at a very high standard offering a variety of styles, many backed by entrancing dancers and lively actors.

Dressed as a pastor, Bodyguard (Roger Mohammed) amused all with his song “Ungrateful” which took aim at an unnamed public figure (guess who!) referred to as “you ungrateful pastor” for espousing religious thoughts while the population was suffering poverty.

Red hot Phase II the band to beat

DEFENDING Panorama champions HCL Phase II Pan Groove emerged as the top band in the Large Band category of the semi-finals held on Sunday at the Queen’s Park Savannah and undoubtedly are favourites to regain the title at the finals to be held on February 17.

Phase II literally shared licks to all and sundry as the band, led by Keith Serrette and playing in position number 14, performed Len “Boogsie” Sharpe’s arrangement of “Sharing Licks” to the delight of the fans.

SOUTH LEFT OUT

San Fernando bands fail to qualify for pan finals

In an effort to placate the steel orchestras from San Fernando, none of which has made it to the finals of the 2007 bmobile National Panorama Championships, Pan Trinbago is considering taking ten bands to the finals instead of the initial eight.

Pan Trinbago president, Patrick Arnold, told the Express yesterday that this would mean two smaller shows rather than the one main event at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on Carnival Saturday.

South Panorama fans disappointed

There was major disappointment in South Trinidad yesterday, after a South steelband failed to make it to the National Panorama finals for the first time in decades.

Southerners were said to be upset that there would be no representative in the final, which will be held in San Fernando for the first time.

Rooplal G retains Chutney crown

In a battle among the kings of chutney and calypso, Rooplal G emerged winner taking the top prize of $200,000 at the NLCB’s Chutney Soca Monarch on Saturday evening, leaving Reigning Calypso Monarch Luta (Morel Peters) in the dust. Luta who had thrilled the audience throughout the competition failed to make the grade.

Traditional mas competition for St James

A release from the St James Social & Cultural Committee yesterday stated that the Committee is “committed to Keeping our Heritage alive.”

In keeping its promise, the St James based group will once again stage its Traditional Mas Individuals Competition.

This year, the competition is being presented as a Mini Street Parade from Bournes Road and Western Main to the judging point at the St James Amphitheatre, on February 7, beginning at 6 pm.
