National Schools Soca Monarch Competition Semi-finalists

Flavorite Supreme Ice Cream National Schools Soca Monarch Competition 2007

The semi-final round of the NSSM Competition will be held at the Port of Spain City Hall on Saturday 27th January 2007 from 9:00AM.

Fifty-eight young people from primary and secondary schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago competed in the preliminary round on Saturday 20th January 2007 at City Hall for forty spaces in the semi-final round.

Considered the “pope” of Ifa and Orisa worshippers, Agbaye is second only to the King of Nigeria, His Royal Highness, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubisi II.

2007 Soca Monarch Media Launch

The Caribbean Prestige Foundation for the Performing Arts held a media launch for the 2007 International Soca Monarch, Groovy Soca Monarch & National Schools’ Soca Monarch competitions on Thursday 18th January, 2007, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Several speakers made their way on the podium to give the audience more information about the various competitions.

The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organization (T.U.C.O.) was initiated by its founder and first president, Mr. Michael Legerton, after the unification of the Trinbago Calypsonians Organization (TCO) and the Calypsonians Association of Trinidad & Tobago (CATT) in 1992. T.U.C.O. now has one branch in the east, one in the north, one in the south of Trinidad and two in Tobago. Over the years each zone managed, with the support and approval of the T.U.C.O. central executive, to form and run Calypso tents such as Klassic Ruso of the North Zone, Kaiso Karavan of the East Zone, Kaiso Showkase of the South Zone, and two tents in the east and west of Tobago.

The preliminaries of the 11th Annual Chutney Soca Monarch Competition took place on Saturday 13th January, 2007, at the Samar Entertainment Centre, Debe. Despite the inclement weather, fifty artistes braved not only the rain but the critical assessment of the judges and the audience that night. Each of the contestants vied for the coveted crown held by last year’s winner, Rooplal Girdharrie and over $500,000 in cash prizes. T&TEC Gayatones provided the musical accompaniment for the contestants.

Soca music loses one of its sons Ellis Chow Lin On succumbs to heart attack

SOCA MUSIC lost one of its most faithful sons yesterday as Ellis Chow Lin On, 69, passed away at St Clair Medical Complex.

One of the founders of pioneer soca band Charlie’s Roots, as well as a producer/manager of some of the biggest and most successful artistes in the genre, Chow Lin On was brother to renowned Carnival engineer/artisan Aldwyn Chow Lin On, father of record producer/radio company owner, Anthony “Chinese Laundry” Chow Lin On.

Calypso Revue’s Sonny Woodley dies

Veteran calypso administrator and Calypso Revue tent manager Sonny Woodley died at his Morvant home on Friday, succumbing to respitory failure.

The affable Woodley, 78, held the helm of the vintage tent in recent years following the demise of longstanding friends and business partners Aldwyn Roberts (Kitchener) and Carl “Jazzy” Pantin.
