Duane O’Connor the 2012 Calypso Monarch
Duane O’Connor has dethroned Karene Asche at the Calypso Monarch competition to secure the $1 million first prize. O’Connor ‘s two songs, “The Hunt is On” and “Long Live Calypso,” received the judges’ collective nod to take home the crown at the Dimanche Gras show. He is also the Young King for 2012.

Karene Asche was crowned 2011 Calypso Monarch, at the Queen’s Park Savannah, in Port of Spain, early this morning (March 7). Asche captured the $2 million first prize with her two selections, “Be Careful What You Ask For” and “Uncle Jack”. Wade Madray – “Pacific Tsunami” – copped the King of Carnival title. And Peola Marchan – “D Jeweled Chandelier” – was named Queen of Carnival.
Percy ‘Striker’ Oblington
Truely an elder in the Calypso artform, Percival Oblington ‘The Mighty Striker’, died on Saturday 5th, 2011, after being ill for some time. Born in 1930, Striker would be remembered for his long service together with capturing the Calypso King Competition in 1958 and 1959.

Leroy ‘Mighty Conqueror’ Paul
Leroy ‘Mighty Conqueror’ Paul was struck by a car on the night of Thursday 27th January, 2011, while crossing Wrightson Road near the Kalypso Revue Tent at SWWTU Hall. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital. ‘Mighty Conqueror’ was on his way to rehearsals for the 2011 Calypso tent season. His hits included “Trinidad Dictionary”, “Woman And Money” and “Fresh Water Yankee”. He was 71.

The final curtain of the NAPA FEST, a production of the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism, came down on the weekend of July 17th and 18th, 2010, with a memorable Calypso show entitled “Trinidad and Tobago History Through The Eyes of Calypso” in honour of some of our legendary Calypso bards.

Masqueraders turned Port-of-Spain, San Fernando and venues across the country into a “palance party” as they gave Soca Monarchs JW and Blaze’s hit “Palance” a runaway victory in the Road March race.
