Culture Minister, NCC boss duck questions

Faced with a wave of questions from the media on the chaos and bacchanal surrounding Carnival 2008, both Culture Minister Marlene Mc Donald and National Carnival Commission (NCC) chairman Keston Nancoo beat a hasty retreat from the La Boucan Room of the Hilton where next year’s Carnival was officially launched.

The two presided over an elaborate two-hour launch of the Reign of the Merry Monarch replete with speeches and presentations from a range of culture personalities. However, both Mc Donald and Nancoo steered well clear of several controversies surrounding Carnival 2008.

2K8 Soca Monarch launched

Officials of Caribbean Prestige Foundation for the Performing Arts (CPF) unveiled plans for the 2008 edition of the International Soca Monarch competition during an official launch Tuesday night at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

CPF spokesman Keenan Munroe said the competition will be more intimate. “We will be taking a more interactive approach to the Soca Monarch. People can look forward to a lot leading up to the show. There will be a lot of campaigning which will involve a bmobile caravan and ticket giveaways,” he revealed.

Bunji’s back

After a one-year hiatus, three-time International Soca Monarch Bunji Garlin returns to the competition in 2008 to challenge defending champion, Iwer George, with whom he once shared the coveted title.
