Barataria Senior Comprehensive student Megan Walrond is the new Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO)/Sunshine Snacks National Junior Calypso Monarch.

The 17-year-old, who finished last in the 2006 competition and did not participate last year, returned in style by scoring 426 points to cop the title from 12 other competitors yesterday at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

By far the biggest and most exciting event in the Soca in the Square series so far, Bunji, Faye-Ann and the Asylum band gave the audience a fantastic show on Wednesday, 23rd January, 2008. The Square was tightly packed, more so than the first two days, with working adults and school children coming to see the ‘Fireman’ and friends firsthand.

The show began with the introduction of costume-clad ladies showcasing the sections of Ronnie Mac Intosh’s Carnival band. The crowd showed their appreciation for the spectacle but also showed their great anticipation for what was to come.

A RETIRED prisons officer is the 2008 Young King Calypso Monarch

The Mighty Diamond (Patrick Purcell Lewis) beat back 17 other contestants at the St James Amphitheatre on Monday night to win the title and a $100,000 cash prize.

The new Young King, who lives at Bon Air Gardens, Arouca, and is attached to the Icons Calypso Tent this season, scored his surprise victory after rendering “Crime Issues,” a social commentary in which he declared: “The only time they know to stop crime is when they threaten the State.”

The second day of the Soca in the Square series, Tuesday 22nd January, 2008, featured KMC and the Red, White and Black band. Although the crowd was not as large as the day before, it was still quite substantial and the audience was very much delighted with the performances.

Ken Marlon Charles (KMC) was joined on stage with Diamond Cut who provided good support and later by Gospel-Soca artiste, Jadee. Members of the audience seemed quite pleased, so much so that they were very aware that the programme finished about ten minutes before it was supposed to. Most stayed till the end.

35 vie to dethrone Cro Cro

Thirty-five contestants are scheduled to appear at the TUCO Calypso Monarch semi-finals popularly known as Calypso Fiesta this Saturday at Skinner Park, San Fernando, to vie for a place in the finals of the competition which has returned to the Queen’s Park Savannah this year.

Soca in the Square started off with a bang on Monday 21st January, 2008, with Machel Montano HD setting Woodford Square afire, especially with Montano’s commanding and energetic performance. The event began at the noon hour with the Square already filled with thousands of Soca aficionados who took time away from school and from work to see their favourite Soca artistes.

To officialize the Soca in the Square series, Councillor Joel London, representing the Mayor of Port of Spain Murchison Brown, took to the platform to bequeath his welcome.

Pan prelims at Savannah today

For the first time in six years, preliminary judging of the North/East conventional steelband competition for Panorama 2008 will take place at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain today.

Due to a recent three-day retreat organised by the Ministry of Culture for the National Steel Symphony, the usual panyard judging did not take place.

Jack ploughs $650,000 Chaguanas Carnival celebrations

AUSTIN JACK WARNER, FIFA’s Football administrator, will be ploughing $650,000 into the Carnival Celebrations in Chaguanas in 2008.

Deputy Chairman of the Chaguanas Carnival Committee, Orlando Nagessar, said that the NCC’s contribution would be $250,000, and with the one million dollars planned, the rest of the money would be contributed by Warner, the Chaguanas West UNC-A MP Of this amount $160,000 has been allocated for the Miss Chaguanas Carnival Queen Show on Friday, February 1, at the Market Square.

The contestants will be vying for the title with the prizes being – first -$5,000; second – $4,000; third – $3,000; forth – $2,500; fifth – $2,000. Other cash prizes will be presented for – Best Costume, Best Answered question; Most elegant; Most confident. Nagessar said most of the shows for C2K8 in Chaguanas would take place at the Chaguanas Market Car Park while the parade of the bands and the J’ouvert competition would be staged at Ramsaran Street.
