William Munro to step down

The man who created the International Soca Monarch competition will step down after he produces ‘the biggest and best ever show’ this Carnival.

Caribbean Prestige Foundation businessman William Munro will step down and pass the baton to his fellow directors. Munro told Sunday Express, “This year’s International Soca Monarch and Groovy Soca Monarch will be my last.

Reigning champs knock April Carnival

STRONG disapproval for the proposed change for the Carnival days has come from two of the season’s reigning champions. Brian MacFarlane, reigning Band of the Year designer, and Calypso Monarch Cro Cro have stated opposition to the proposed change.

Junia Regrello, parliamentary secretary for the Culture Ministry, said the change of dates was something worth looking at, noting the challenges faced during the short season this year.

These were the words of Terry Joseph, noted by his wife Dr Laini Gilliam-Joseph, in his final days before dying of prostate cancer on January 2 in Douglasville, USA.

CULTURAL aficionado and writer Terry Joseph has died.

Joseph, 60, who had been battling with prostate cancer for the past year, passed away around 7 pm yesterday at Douglasville in Georgia, at his wife’s home.

Aubrey gets Ambakaila send-off

Following the near 2-hour funeral service on Monday at All Saints Anglican Church for cultural icon Aubrey Adams, as his body was being taken out of the church to the hearse, members of the Trinidad Folk Performing Company which Adams founded, began to drum and sing “Dance the Bele”, followed by “Ambakaila,” the theme of Adams’ production that exposed the culture of the country to the world.

Arrest warrants were being prepared yesterday for soca stars Machel Montano and Derek Perreira (Mr Slaughter), following a stabbing incident on Carnival Tuesday last year.

The warrants were being prepared by officers of the Woodbrook Police Station and charges of wounding with intent are expected to be laid against Montano and Perreira.

Prophet BenjaminDeputy Commissioner of Police Winston Cooper and Member of Parliament for Barataria/San Juan Dr Fuad Khan are calling on show promoters and local performers to be more responsible in the type of entertainment they provide for young people.

Their calls come in the wake of the Akon/Danah Alleyne controversy involving a raunchy dance onstage.

Last Sunday, TriniStyle Entertainment hosted an automobile expo at Arima Velodrome, which attracted thousands of adults and children.

Several parents expressed outrage at the performance of singer Prophet Benjamin in relation to the explicit lyrics of his song Stop, pertaining to oral sex and masturbation.

They were also disturbed by repetitive calls made by the performer to “legalise marijuana” during his performance.
