So it’s Carnival Sunday once again. The country is alive with that special energy. Today, I extend a special “welcome home” to those of the Trinbagonian diaspora who are “home” for the festivities. For many who reside abroad, this pilgrimage is an important way of connecting with our “roots.” In the travel and tourism industry, we call these people VFR traffic, that is, those who come to visit friends and relatives.
Derren Joseph logoMy uncle Steve is one of these overseas-based Trinis who visits for Carnival when he can. Last week, Uncle Steve was sharing with me his memories of Carnival growing up. His mother discouraged him from participating in Carnival, because of its association with violence and negativity. In secondary school, Short Pants helped me understand just how important history is. So now, I enjoy talking to the elders about Trinidad in times gone by. We could never know where we are going until we appreciate where we came from. This Carnival I enjoyed my calypso. Despite rumours to the contrary, calypso is alive and well. Kudos to Pink Panther, Brother Resistance, Karega Mandela and the rest of the TUCO executive.

Bro Mudada is Veteran Monarch
ALAN Fortune, also known in the Calypso world as Brother Mudada, has been crowned the Veterans Calypso Monarch 2009. He was adjudged the winner after a keenly contested competition hosted by the National Action Cultural Committee on Monday night at the SWWTU Hall, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain.

Just two weeks to Carnival, and we can feel it in the air. Various corporate sponsors have started putting up banners around Port-of-Spain proper and in St James. These are now an expected part of the Carnival landscape–similar to lights during Christmas time.
Banners from our more responsible corporate citizens have thoughtful messages that remind us to have fun, but also to be careful.

‘Boy Boy’ a hit with parents and children
Roughly 2,000 children and their parents had a good time on Saturday, when Machel Montano presented the musical production, Boy Boy and the Magic Drum, at the Jean Pierre Complex in Mucurapo.
Pumping soca at Ladies Night Out
Calypso Rose showed her younger counterparts that she could still conquer a crowd on Friday night at the Jean Pierre Complex for the sixth edition of the Randy Glasgow Production, Ladies Night Out. The veteran had the large crowd on their feet, as she unleashed and revamped many of her classics.
