Shalleika creates calypso history

Eight-year-old Shalleika Hazell created history yesterday when she won the Junior Calypso Monarch at Queen's Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.

Hazell out-sang a field of 12 to become the youngest winner in the history of the competition, and in the process, kept the coveted calypso title in her family, having dethroned her sister, Sheynnene, 11, the defending monarch.

Speaking from the family's home in Chaguanas yesterday, Hazell said she was very pleased with the achievement.
