The National Action Cultural Committee (NACC) held their 25th annual Kings Go Forth Calypso show on Saturday 8th March, 2009, at the SWWTU Hall in Port of Spain. The show featured the top Calypso performers from the 2009 Carnival season performing their winning compositions before the appreciative audience. This year, the show honoured veteran musician Roy Cape for his contribution to the Calypso art form.

Megan Walrond

In the first half Megan Walrond, reigning Junior Calypso Monarch, performed her winning Calypso "You Name Woman". Penned by her mother, this Calypso highlighted the trials and tribulations of women, advising women not to cry as so they make their bed, so they will lie. Cindy Alleyne also focused on the nature of our society with her song "We Must Reach Out" in which she delivered a stern message to wayward teachers and heartless employers who exploited workers in the pursuit of profit.

Mark 'Contender' John

Contender won the first encore of the night with his sharp Kaiso that proclaimed that you cannot buy an extempo song. Explaining that Calypsonians can easily buy songs from various named writers, he said that the nature of the extempo is such that a singer has to be knowledgeable on many topics and has to compose on the spot, which calls for extempo bards to have special skills. Kizzie Ruiz also got strong support from the audience with her Calypso "Class Language" where she voiced that there was one language for the rich and another for the poor in describing the same behaviors.

Erpham Alves

Reigning Secondary Schools Junior Soca Monarch Erpham Alves took the audience on a "Musical Journey" as he showed just why he captured the Junior Soca Monarch title. Reigning Primary Schools Junior Soca Monarch Timel Rivas gave a confident rendition of "They're Silent" despite mic problems while Kesi Bennet had the audience in stitches with her humorous song "No Explanation" which spoke of her father's unwillingness to give her an explanation as to why their usually fierce pedigree watchdog was so afraid of a Chinese man.

Aaron Duncan

Young Aaron Duncan brought the audience to a state of frenzy with his confident lyrics and onstage antics that were far beyond his five year old age. He explained in song the many lessons that he learns from TV as he pleaded with his mother not to stop him from watching television.

Sekon Alves

Sekon Alves with his song "Conscious Lyrics" rejected the view that only Reggae music can have conscious lyrics as he highlighted various Calypsos that deliver serious social messages while Young Kings winner Jervae Caesar performed his song "Buy Local" that made a case for stronger support of local culture and products.

Kenrick Salick

Kenrick Salick, the 2009 Chutney Soca Monarch performed his winning hit "Radica", a Chutney tabanca love song composed from the experience of his wife leaving him sixteen years ago. He was joined on stage by a dancing Aaron Duncan to the delight of the audience.

Brian London
Brian London

Reigning South Monarch Brian London got one of the biggest responses from the audience with his energetic performance of "A Nation's Song" which spoke of his experiences singing Calypso for the people. In song, he conveyed to the appreciative audience that he is going to focus on the people and deal with issues such as race, crime, hate, political divisions and the gap between rich and poor.

Winston 'De Fosto' Scarborough

De Fosto charmed the audience with his typically patriotic Calypso "Could We Rise Again" as he followed up on his strong showing in the Dimanche Gras finals while Tobago Chalkdust showed signs of his own cutting lyrics with his song "Our Nation's Blood".

Hollis 'Chalkdust' Liverpool

National Calypso Monarch Hollis 'Chalkdust' Liverpool was the last performer with his winning song "Don't Touch My Heart" as he gave the audience a taste of his wit and biting lyrics which won him his eighth National Calypso title. Also performing on the evening were Laventille Sound Specialists, Brother Valentino, Sheldon Nugget, Karene Asche, Brother Hamidullah, Brother Mudada and Mr. King.
