Kenrick Salick captured the 2009 Chutney Soca Monarch title before a large crowd at Skinner Park, San Fernando. Singing "Radica" a love song composed from the experience of his wife leaving him 16 years ago, the little known Salick moved the audience enough to garner over 11,000 votes from the audience and other viewers. It was a fairy tale end for the 46 year old singer from Sande Grande whose song obviously resonated with the crowd:

"Since you leave me, I am alone
I am like a dog, without a bone,
Gyul I don’t want to be alone,
So Radica why yuh leave and gooo
oohhh, Radica why yuh leave and gooo"

For the first time in the history of the competition, the results were determined entirely by the audience who texted their choices which was tallied to determine the winners. This new judging system was implemented because of the protests against the judges decisions in previous competitions.

Ravi Bissembhar, lead singer of the band Karma, captured second place with 8832 votes with his popular double entendred song "Dhulari" which spoke of his love for a girl whose family did not like him. The only time he felt welcome, sang Ravi B is when he went down by the nani (Hindu word for the maternal grandmother). Also creating a big impression was Lalchan "Hunter" Babwah who fired up the audience with his popular song "Jep Sting Naina" placing third with 4383 votes while Asha Kamachee with her traditional styled Chutney song was fourth with 3975 votes.

They employed skits, moko jumbies, dancers and other props in their efforts to capture the attention of the audience.
