The 2007 National Schools Soca Monarch competition preliminary round took place on Saturday 20th January, 2007, at City Hall, Port of Spain. Over fifty students from all over Trinidad and Tobago participated in the competition hoping to get through to the semi-final and the final rounds of the competition.

Most of the songs were upbeat-type Soca tunes although some fell into the Groovy Soca genre. The audience, which comprised the participating students, their parents and some teachers made their presence felt by giving approval to their favourite tunes.

Some of the judging criterion included good lyrical content, melody and crowd response. Some of the tunes did possess all or a few of the criteria but there is evidence that more work needs to be done in order that these Soca amateurs create the right mix to get the music down correctly. It is the duty of the adults, therefore, to help guide the students in this regard and ensure that they understand the key components of the art form.

Some of the crowd favourites were Erphaan Alves with "Street Heal", Yasin Akil Rashid Gill with "Heed the Youth", Megan Waldron with "Brain Sweat", Orlando Octave with "Throw dem out" and Angel Prescod with "A Song Writer's Life".

Also included as part of the competition was the 'Talkative' segment which is a pilot project put on by the Caribbean Prestige Foundation for students at the Primary School level. 'Talkative' involves talking, singing or chanting on a Soca rhythm and doing so fluently, creatively and intelligently. The three participants in the competition did well in their initial attempts.

The students who would move on to the semi-final round of the National Schools Soca Monarch Competition would soon be announced.
