The National Action Cultural Committee (NACC) and its sister organization the National Women's Action Committee (NWAC) held their prize-giving award ceremony Saturday, 12 May 2007, at the SWWTU courtyard to honour the Calypsonians who participated in the 2007 Young Kings and National Calypso Queens competitions.

Brother Eiyegoro Ome gave the opening address on behalf of the NACC, highlighting that the Young Kings competition has been happening since 1985. In speaking about the achievements of the NACC, he noted that the competition has been important in improving the expertise of artistes. He shared some of the plans of the NACC with the audience, including plans to expand the Young Kings Calypso Competition and the Top 20 Stars of Gold to include the wider Caribbean. One such competition, he said, will be held in St. Kitts. In addition, he spoke of the 11th Annual Emancipation Calypso Competition which will be held on the 26th of June. In closing, Brother Ome thanked all who made the competition a success.

Dela Obika, Servant President of the National Women's Action Committee (NWAC), stated that the National Calypso Queen 2007 Competition was one of the best productions of the Carnival season. She noted that the competition was not only entertaining and informative, but significant in its highlighting of women in Calypso. Sister Obika went on to commend the efforts of women in Calypso in contributing towards development and noted that every one of them is a queen of Calypso. Like Brother Ome, she highlighted the internationalization of the Calypso artform and questioned the role of women in this process. She too revealed that the NWAC is currently in discussion with other islands to have a Caribbean Calypso Queen Competition.

The Honourable Joan Yuille-Williams, Minister of Community Development, Culture and Youth Affairs, addressed the audience next and congratulated the NWAC and the NACC on moving beyond national borders. She highlighted the importance of culture and noted the cultural contingent that accompanied the Soca Warriors to Germany as an example of this. She spoke of the Ministry's efforts to develop and support local culture by having programmes in event management and songwriting as well as the development of the Academy for the Performing Arts, which will be located in both Port of Spain and San Fernando. She mentioned an upcoming consultation for people to comment about this year's Carnival celebrations. The Minister also spoke of the transformation of the part of the Queen's Park Savannah, which houses the Grand Stand. She declared that the Grand Stand is not being destroyed, but is being dismantled into smaller units and given to various communities around Trinidad and Tobago for their use.

It was a high-spirited and entertaining evening as the awardees treated the audience to their competition songs. Young guest artistes Allan Clelland-Goddard, Victoria Cooper and Ferdinand Smith all performed commendably to the delight of those gathered. The evening climaxed with the winning performances of the 2007 National Calypso Queen, Maria Bhola and Young King 2007, Bodyguard. The entertaining political commentaries found favour with the audience as all of the 2007 winners gathered on stage, bringing the curtains down on the prize-giving function.
