Thousands of students from all over Trinidad and Tobago journeyed to the Jean Pierre Complex on Thursday 1st February, 2007, to support their peers in the National Organisation of Rededicated Students' (NORS) Calypso Pioneers Competition. Year after year, this competition has grown in popularity and has become a mainstay in Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival activities.

The event started about ten minutes to twelve with an opening prayer by Cindy Alleyne, followed by brief addresses by Director of the NYAC, Bro. Akhenaton Daaga who assured all the participating students that they were all winners and by Sales Representative of CLICO, Mr. Daryl Dasent. Mr. Dasent intimated that competitions such as these provide an avenue for students to come together and express themselves and that CLICO is proud to be part of such an initiative.

After these brief speeches the competition started without delay. The young competitors and their songs are listed below:

Artist and School / Song

Shanelle Pierre of Holy Saviour Anglican Primary School, Curepe / "Mankind's Destructive Attitude"

Agyei Duncan of Scarborough R.C. Primary School / "Open the Gates for Carnival"

Jerisha Regis of St. Rose's Girls' R.C. Primary School / "Don't Want to go Back There"

The young Calypsonians performed quite confidently and sang on many issues ranging from crime to street children. Artistes such as 2006 Calypso Pioneers Competition winner, Allan Goddard-Clelland of St. Xavier's Private Primary School, and Ferdinand Smith of Valencia South Government, who placed third in last year's competition, were able to do good jobs of connecting with the audience and were rewarded with screams from the crowd on the stands. Both have entered several other competitions. Other artistes who received praise from their student peers were Christian Thomas of Mucurapo Junior Secondary, Adrian Adams of Scarborough R.C. and Cheneal Bharat of St. Catherine's Girl's Anglican Primary School.
